The V2 rule: Norwegian word order with exercises and answers

Publisher: NorskMentor. Original practice material; not an official test or level assessment.

V2 means the finite verb comes as the second element in a declarative main clause. An element may contain several words. In «Etter den lange arbeidsdagen tar Mina bussen», the whole time phrase is first and «tar» is second.

Count elements, not individual words

Compare «Mina tar bussen etter jobb» and «Etter jobb tar Mina bussen». Moving the time phrase to the front keeps the verb in second position and puts the subject after it. The basic meaning stays similar; the first element changes the starting point.

Samme innhold, ulik start

Jeg leser norsk på biblioteket. → På biblioteket leser jeg norsk.

Vi skal øve i morgen. → I morgen skal vi øve.

Hun har jobbet her lenge. → Lenge har hun jobbet her. Her er det «har» som er bøyd; «jobbet» blir stående senere.

What happens to «ikke»?

In a simple main clause, write «I dag jobber jeg ikke». The verb comes before the subject, with «ikke» afterwards. Compare «Jeg vet at jeg ikke jobber i dag»: the subordinate clause after «at» has a different pattern, with «ikke» before the verb.

Questions such as «Jobber du i dag?» also follow a different pattern. Identify the sentence type rather than applying a main-clause pattern automatically everywhere.

How to check your own writing

Find the finite verb, then mark the entire first element. If the sentence begins with a time or place phrase, check whether you mistakenly placed the subject before the verb. Correct one sentence and read it aloud before continuing.

Velg riktig ordstilling etter «I dag».
Show answer and explanation

I dag jobber jeg hjemme.

«I dag» is the first sentence element. The finite verb «jobber» is second, before the subject «jeg».

Velg riktig setning.
Show answer and explanation

Etter den lange arbeidsdagen tar Mina bussen hjem.

The whole phrase «Etter den lange arbeidsdagen» is one element even though it contains several words. «Tar» therefore follows the entire phrase.

Hvilken setning har riktig plassering av «ikke» i leddsetningen?
Show answer and explanation

Jeg vet at hun ikke kommer i dag.

After «at», the subject «hun» comes before «ikke» and the verb «kommer». This subordinate clause does not follow the pattern of a main clause beginning with «I dag».

Frequently asked questions

Does V2 mean the verb is always the second word?
No. It is the second sentence element, and the first element may contain several words.
Does this apply to every Norwegian sentence?
These examples concern declarative main clauses. Questions and subordinate clauses need their own explanations.
