Online Norwegian courses: teacher-led lessons or self-study?

Publisher: NorskMentor. Original practice material; not an official test or level assessment.

An online Norwegian course can mean scheduled teacher-led lessons, tasks you complete independently or a combination. Choose according to the support you need, how you will practise speaking and what follow-up is included. NorskMentor is a practice and self-study platform at A1–B2.

Three ways to learn Norwegian online

In a teacher-led course, you meet a teacher and often other learners at scheduled times. Ask how much speaking time each learner gets and whether the teacher comments individually on your writing. A virtual classroom is a different service from a library of tasks.

With self-study, you choose your own time and pace. You need a routine, tasks suited to your level and a way to investigate mistakes. A combination can work when you practise between lessons and bring questions to your teacher.

Which approach suits you?

Choose teacher-led lessons when you need scheduled sessions, personal follow-up or live help in conversation. Consider self-study if you can organise short sessions and want to repeat material at your own pace. If you need recognised teaching hours or documentation, check whether the particular service meets that requirement.

  • Irregular working hours: choose practice you can reschedule and arrange any speaking sessions separately.
  • You understand a lot but rarely speak: prioritise actual speaking time and feedback, rather than only more reading tasks.
  • Preparing for Norskprøven: divide time among the skills you need and practise relevant task types.

How to compare prices

Compare the total charge for the same period and establish what is included. Lessons may be priced per hour or course period; self-study may use a recurring subscription. Check whether books, teacher comments, class size and speaking time are included. A low monthly price says little about the number of taught hours.

Also check commitments, renewal, cancellation and what happens after a trial. Current NorskMentor web prices appear below from the same source as the pricing page. They cover platform access, not teacher-led course hours. School and business arrangements are agreed separately.

What does NorskMentor provide?

Practise reading, listening, writing and speaking, supported by grammar and vocabulary, on web, iPhone and Android. AI-generated comments are guidance and can contain mistakes. Teacher follow-up depends on a separate arrangement and connected accounts in the platform.

A first week of self-study

Begin with a short text on a familiar topic. Find the main point and choose three words to use yourself. Next session, write five sentences with those words. Read them aloud, make a short recording and investigate one improvement. Finally, rewrite without copying the first attempt.

This is a suggested working method, not a promise of a particular level after one week. Adjust length and difficulty to what you can actually manage.
