Norwegian A1 for beginners: words, sentences and exercises

Publisher: NorskMentor. Original practice material; not an official test or level assessment.

At A1, start using Norwegian in short, familiar situations: introduce yourself, ask a time or understand a simple message. Begin with sentences you can use yourself and expand them gradually. These examples are practice, not a level test.

What can you start with?

Practise names, where you live, work, family and times. Learn short questions together with answers: «Hvor bor du?» – «Jeg bor i Oslo». Replace one word to make a new answer. This is more usable than memorising a long list without context.

To understand others, include listening. Hear a short answer, pause and repeat it. Ask your partner to slow down or repeat when needed. Use what you understand to respond, even if your answer is short.

A short text to work with

Read the text. Find the name, place and time before looking up unfamiliar words. Then write three sentences about yourself using the same pattern.

Jeg heter Amir

Jeg heter Amir. Jeg bor i Oslo. Jeg jobber på en kafé. Jeg begynner på jobb klokka åtte. Etter jobb går jeg hjem og lager mat.

Spørsmål: Hvor bor Amir? Når begynner han på jobb? Mulige svar: Han bor i Oslo. Han begynner klokka åtte.

Four short practice sessions

Reading: find one specific answer, such as a time. Listening: hear a short message and say what the person wants. Writing: write a message saying when you will arrive. Speaking: introduce yourself without reading the whole text from the screen.

Choose one improvement at a time, such as «jeg heter» or the difference between «hvor» and «når». Once you understand the task, repeat it with different information.

When should you move towards A2?

Try explaining more than one fact: where you are going, when you will arrive and why. Keep practising A1 tasks in a skill you want to strengthen. Levels describe language use; days spent in an app do not determine your level.

Try it yourself: open tasks with explanations

Choose an answer, or open the answer key directly without an account. These tasks are practice, not an official level assessment.

Hva heter du?
Show answer and explanation

Jeg heter Sara.

The question asks your name. «Jeg heter Sara» answers directly. The other answers describe where you live or what you do.

Biblioteket åpner klokka ni. Når kan du gå inn?
Show answer and explanation

Klokka ni.

«Åpner klokka ni» means you can enter from 9 o’clock. The text does not say the library is only open in the evening.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need Norwegian before starting?
Start with the short texts and questions here. Use explanations for support and practise a few expressions at a time.
Do the tasks show whether I have passed A1?
No. They are small practice tasks. A level result requires a separate assessment of several skills.
